Donald Trump dissed Rosie O’Donnell when pressed on his history of directing demeaning language towards women during the Republican debate Thursday night.
There were 10 Republican presidential candidates present at the first primary debate for the party that was hosted by Fox News. O’Donnell wasn’t among them, yet it was her name that Trump spat out when he was asked about referring to women as pigs and dogs, as well as using degrading sexual innuendo.
“One of the things people love about you is that you speak your mind, don’t use a politician’s filter,” said Megyn Kelly, who was one of the debate moderators. “But that has its downsides, in particular when it comes to women. You call women you don’t like ‘fat pigs,’ ‘dogs,’ ‘slobs,’ and ‘disgusting animals…'”
“Only Rosie O’Donnell,” Trump interjected, drawing a laugh from the crowd.
“No, it wasn’t. It was well beyond Rosie O’Donnell,” Kelly said, pressing on, “You once told a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice that it ‘would be a pretty picture to see her on her knees.’ Does that sound to you like the temperament of someone we should elect as president,” and “how would you answer the question from Hillary Clinton…that you are part of the war on women?”
Instead of engaging Kelly on the issue of sexism and his history of sexist remarks, Trump pivoted to one of his favorite talking points – political correctness. According to the businessman-turned-aspiring politician, the problem is not a war on women, but rather a war on candor and Trump’s personal brand of brash humor.
“The big problem this country has is being politically correct. I’ve been challenged by so many people, I don’t have time for total political correctness,” Trump argued. “What I say is fun, it’s kidding, we have a good time.”
As the debate moved on to other topics, O’Donnell weighed in on Twitter.
