Donald Trump has been disinvited from the RedState Gathering, a conservative event for GOP presidential candidates this weekend, after making sexist comments regarding Fox News’ Megyn Kelly.
Trump has been on the attack ever since Kelly, who was one of three moderators at Thursday’s Fox News GOP Debate, asked him about his past of misogynistic and sexist comments during the debate. Trump answered the question, but later went on to blast it as unfair and he riled up his supporters, who were also upset by the question, on Twitter. Even in the midst of his answer, Trump appeared ready to unleash his anger onto Kelly, saying, “And, honestly Megyn, if you don’t like it, I’m sorry. I’ve been very nice to you, although I could probably maybe not be based on the way you have treated me, but I wouldn’t do that.”
Less than a few hours after promising Kelly he “wouldn’t do that,” Trump took to Twitter to trash the Kelly and Fox News.
Trump continued to bash Kelly during a phone call appearance on CNN Tonight. “She gets out and she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions. You know, you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes — blood coming out of her wherever,” Trump told host Don Lemon.
Trump’s unpleasant comment about “blood coming out of her wherever” quickly went viral, as many took it as a jab about her gender. Angry people took to Twitter to express their displeasure at Trump’s ridiculous comments, and Erick Erickson, editor of RedState.com, a conservative website that is hosting the RedState Gathering this weekend, responded. Trump was scheduled to give the keynote speech at the RedState Gathering in Atlanta, but was officially disinvited late Friday night.
Erickson explained his decision, writing that Trump had crossed a line when speaking about Kelly on CNN, pointing directly to Trump’s “blood coming out of her wherever” quote. Erickson wrote that while he thinks Trump deserves respect as a GOP Presidential frontrunner, and “while Mr. Trump resonates with a lot of people with his bluntness, including me to a degree, there are just real lines of decency a person running for President should not cross.”
“His comment was inappropriate. It is unfortunate to have to disinvite him. But I just don’t want someone on stage who gets a hostile question from a lady and his first inclination is to imply it was hormonal. It just was wrong,” Erickson added.
Erickson also said that he had invited Kelly to speak as a possible Trump replacement.
Meanwhile, GOP presidential hopefuls including Marco Rubio, Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush and Scott Walker are all attending the conference. Candidates Huckabee and Carly Fiorina, who also appeared at the event, both took the opportunity to criticize Trump. Fiorina, the only woman currently in the race as a Republican, simply tweeted, “Mr. Trump: There. Is. No. Excuse.”
Huckabee was a bit more measured in his response to the controversy, praising Kelly, his former Fox News co-worker, as a “intellectually unsurpassed as a broadcast journalist” and saying that he hopes Trump apologizes. “I would certainly never say anything about a person like that, and I hope he apologizes because I think he should,” Huckabee said.
After it was announced that Trump had been disinvited from the conservative event, Trump attempted to do some damage control, claiming he meant that blood was coming out of Kelly’s nose. According to Erickson, Trump’s camp also said that Trump meant to say “whatever” instead of “wherever,” but the damage was done.
Trump also criticized RedState.com as being too concerned with “political correctness,” and trashed Erickson. “For all of the people who were looking forward to Mr. Trump coming, we will miss you. Blame Erick Erickson, your weak and pathetic leader,” said the Trump campaign.
