In typical Donald Trump fashion, the president-elect took to Twitter this morning to denounce Meryl Streep after her emotional acceptance speech at the Golden Globes.
Without even uttering Trump’s name, Streep was able to describe her disappointment with the 2016 election. But mainly she condemned hate, disrespect and violence and called for the protection of journalists. “There was one performance this year that stunned me,” she said. “It sank its hooks in my heart, not because it was good. There was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power, and, the capacity to fight back.”
Streep was talking about Trump mocking disabled reporter Serge Kovaleski of the New York Times. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence,” she said. “When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.” She moved on to speaking about the press, saying we must help protect them, as they are being vilified right now in this country.
Trump took to Twitter to rant about the speech, calling Streep “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood.” Streep has won eight Golden Globes out of 30 nominations, and three Oscars out of 18 nominations.
Trump vented: “Hillary flunky who lost big.” He again denied the allegation, despite abundant video evidence, as it occurred at a campaign rally, that he ever mocked the reporter.
In a brief phone interview, Trump said he hadn’t watched the Globes or seen Streep’s speech, but was “not surprised” that he had been attacked by “liberal movie people.”
She added, “Power couple emerging 20225 let's EAT🍰”
