Donald Trump allegedly hired actors to fill in the crowd during his official presidential campaign launch in New York City Wednesday.
Trump’s campaign reportedly had Extra Mile Casting send out an email to actors, asking them if they were interested in a background gig for Trump’s event to bolster attendance, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“We are looking to cast people for the event to wear t-shirts and carry signs and help cheer him in support of his announcement,” reads the June 12 email that THR obtained. “We understand this is not a traditional ‘background job,’ but we believe acting comes in all forms and this is inclusive of that school of thought.”
According to the email, the actors were offered $50 for less than three hours of work as an enthusiastic Trump supporter.
When asked about the email in question, Extra Mile said, “We don’t know anything about that,” and refused to answer further questions.
Trump’s campaign answered the accusation about hiring actors with a simple denial. His campaign manager Corey Lewandowski went on to boast of his candidate’s ability to draw massive crowds.
“Mr. Trump draws record crowds at almost every venue where he is a featured speaker,” Lewandowski told MSNBC. “The crowds are large, often record setting, and enthusiastic, with consistent standing ovations.”
The Trump campaign had expected 1,000 people to turn out at the Trump Tower Atrium for the real estate mogul’s official launch. There were roughly 300 attendees, some of whom may or may not have been hired actors.
