Don McLean, the singer-songwriter best known for singing “American Pie,” was arrested on a domestic violence charge Monday.
McLean, 70, was arrested at his home in Camden, Maine, after local police responded to a call in the early hours of Monday morning, according to Chief Randy Gagne of the Camden Police Department in Maine.
“Camden police officers responded to a 911 call at the Don McLean residence shortly before 2 a.m.,” Gagne told Us Weekly. “Mr. McLean was arrested without incident and transported to the Knox County Jail in Rockland, Maine.”
McLean lives on a 300-acre estate with his wife Patrisha and their children Jackie and Wyatt. It’s unknown who McLean allegedly attacked at the residence.
McLean was charged with misdemeanor domestic assault. He was released from police custody on $10,000 bail and will have to appear in court on Feb. 22 to face the charge.
In 1971, McLean released his hit song “American Pie,” which was about the deaths of singers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in a tragic plane crash. Since then, McLean has continued to release albums and tours across the United States, the U.K. and Australia.
McLean is scheduled to perform in Chicago, Houston and La Miranda, Calif., towards the end of January before heading to Australia for a string of shows in March.
