Don King, the infamous boxing promoter, hit the stage at a Donald Trump rally Wednesday to endorse the Republican presidential nominee with a speech that included the use of the n-word.
King took to the podium to introduce and endorse Trump at a predominantly black church in Cleveland, Ohio, yesterday in an appeal to black voters. In his effort to boost Trump’s popularity with African-Americans – which hovers between 0-1% – King offered his musings about why a Trump presidency would be good for African-Americans.
“America needs Donald Trump. We need Donald Trump, especially black people. Because you’ve got to understand, my black brothers and sisters, they told me, ‘You’ve got to try to emulate and imitate the white man and then you can be successful,’” King said. “So we tried that.”
King continued, “I told Michael Jackson, I said if you’re poor, you’re a poor negro. I would use the n-word. But if you’re a rich, you’re a rich negro, if you are intelligent, you’re an intellectual negro. If you’re a dancing and sliding and gliding n****r, I mean negro ― you’re a dancing and sliding and gliding negro. So dare not alienate because you cannot assimilate. You know, you’re going to be a negro till you die.”
King then attempted to pivot his argument, and to use his rhetoric to appeal to white women
“What I’m trying to say to you is that the white women, and I put it in these kind of [words] so you understand what I’m saying, the white woman and the slave, the people of color,” King said. “When the system was created, they did not get heard. The first will be last and the last will be first.”
King rose to notoriety for his involvement in historic boxing matches in the 70s, including “The Rumble in the Jungle,” and the “Thrilla in Manilla.” King is also known for his many controversies, including an investigation into his connection to mobster John Gotti, multiple fraud lawsuits and a manslaughter conviction.
