‘Divergent’ Series Final Installment Might Skip Theaters In Favor Of TV Movie, Spinoff Series
The Divergent series, based on Veronica Roth‘s best-selling dystopian young adult series, might not get a wide release for its final film – The Divergent Series: Ascendant.
Divergent Finale
Lionsgate is planning to conclude the Divergent series with a television movie, and follow it up with a spinoff series, reported Variety. The studio apparently hopes to wrap up the storylines of the characters in the series – with the current cast – on the small screen, according to an insider. The series, however, will feature an all new cast, some of whom will be introduced in the Ascendant movie.
Ascendant was supposed to hit theaters next summer. However, the studio became less keen on the release after Allegiant’s performance at the box office earlier this year. Due to Allegiant‘s underwhelming release – especially compared to that of the franchise’s first two films, Lionsgate sought a different strategy that could build off of the brand.
Divergent star Shailene Woodley has apparently been kept in the dark as Lionsgate works out the details of the new plan.
“I honestly have no idea what’s going on with Divergent. I know as much as you do, ” Woodley told E! News. Woodley, who is promoting Edward Snowden drama Snowden at San Diego Comic-Con, added, “It’s really convenient that we’re doing all these interviews now and I get asked this question [about Divergent].”
