Director Sam Mendes Confirms Cast Of Four Beatles Biopics To Be Released In ‘Cinematic Event’

Sam Mendes has confirmed that Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Harris Dickinson and Joseph Quinn will star as the Beatles members in the upcoming films about the iconic band.

The actors, who will play Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison, respectively, will act in four biopics, all to be released in April 2028.

In 2023, the Beatles released a new song using AI to generate Lennon’s voice.

As producer of the series, Mendes shared the news about his Beatles project on Monday at CinemaCon. Referring to the series as a “cinematic event,” Mendes declared, “Together, all four films will tell the story of the greatest band in history.” Sony CEO Tom Rothman flagged the project as “the first bingeable theatrical experience” and declared, “We are going to dominate the culture that month.”

After Mendes introduced the cast, Mescal, Keoghan, Dickinson and Quinn walked out on stage and proceeded to make quips to the audience, attempting their best Liverpool accents.

Mendes shared that the film would be shot over a full year of principal photography to complete the four films and that there would be a specific order in which he’d suggest the biopic be watched, though he did not give further detail. He told the audience that no matter how well-versed they felt they were on Beatles knowledge, “I can assure you there’s still plenty of stuff left to explore.”

The Beatles have had many movies and documentaries made about them, but Mendes’ project will be the first biopic with a full life story and music rights from each of the band members’ estates. In addition to Mendes, the series is produced by Pippa Harris, Julie Pastor and Alexandra Derbyshire. The official longline is, “Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary.”
