Director Patty Jenkins has confirmed in a tweet that the highly anticipated superhero film Wonder Woman 1984 would still be having a theatrical release despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Wonder Woman 1984 is among the many films in Hollywood that have been delayed because of the pandemic. The film was originally aiming for a release date of June 25, 2020. However, it was pushed back to October 2 before finally delayed to December 25. The film has yet to be given another delay, but many people are predicting that it will happen again.
Given how many movies are being pushed back or outright canceled, some fans believe that the film should be released on a streaming service. It was even rumored at one point that Wonder Woman 1984 would abandon its plans for a theatrical release and instead go directly to streaming. However, Jenkins insisted that the film would stick to a theatrical release no matter what happens. It is not exactly hard to see why Jenkins is pushing to have Wonder Woman 1984 be released to theaters. Despite the fact that some movies have been released to streaming services like Mulan on Disney+ and The Witches on HBO Max, Wonder Woman 1984 is a blockbuster movie and the studios would not be willing to let such a money maker of a film go to waste. It is unknown if the film will be pushed back again. However, fans will likely have to wait for the crisis surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic to die down before they are able to see any of the upcoming action films that have been pushed back to another date. Wonder Woman 1984 is currently one of the last summer blockbusters to have a 2020 release date.
Wonder Woman 1984 will be released on December 25, unless it experiences yet another delay thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
