Director James Cameron Resumes Production ‘Avatar 2’ In New Zealand

James Cameron and the rest of the Avatar 2 production team have commenced shooting of the sequel in New Zealand. Production had begun earlier this year but was paused in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first concept for Avatar 2 was released in January 2020. Earlier this month, photos of underwater filming were revealed before the production of the sequel resumed.

Cameron, producer Jon Landeau and other crew members spent 14 days in quarantine before they all came together to resume work on the film.

Earlier this week, Landeau posted an image of the Avatar set on his Instagram. In the photo, crew members are seen wearing masks and keeping a safe distance from one another. Landeau’s caption reads, “Used my iPhone to snap a picture of our first shot back in production on the Avatar sequels.”

The first of the Avatar movies came out in 2009. Avatar 2 is the first of four planned sequel films and is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2021. Avatar 2 will star Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Cliff Curtis and more. Avatar 3, 4 and 5 are scheduled for December 2023, December 2025, and December 2027 respectively.
