Beyoncé, halftime performer of Super Bowl XLVII, had former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams share the stage with her, but appeared to not share the vocal glory.
Speculation began during the halftime performance that Rowland’s and Williams’s microphones were either malfunctioning or intentionally set at a lower volume than Beyoncé’s. During “Independent Women” and “Single Ladies,” it was difficult to pick up their voices through Beyoncé’s blaring vocals and the background music. Rather than being a reunion of Destiny’s Child, it seemed like Beyoncé hired on her old pals as backup singers.
Reporters were in search of an explanation following the high-octane performance. “It was difficult to hear the vocals of Rowland and Williams, either because of the microphone volumes or the background music,” said Blue Carreon in Forbes. “Rowland and Williams were barely heard when the group sang 'Independent Woman,' as their voices faded into the background,” reported CBS News. “Rowland and Williams’ microphones seemed to be at a lower volume than their former group mate’s,” said Zap2It’s Lauren Brown.
Since Destiny’s Child disbanded in 2006, the three members have all pursued solo careers. Beyoncé, as she made apparent the other night, has been unquestionably the most successful. Rowland’s biggest hit was her song "Dilemma" with Nelly during a hiatus from Destiny’s Child in 2002, and she has continued to do well as an R&B artist. Williams has turned her talents to gospel music, and has also made a name for her self on the theater stage, appearing in such productions as The Color Purple and Chicago. — Chelsea Regan
