The Broadway musical Diana, which is currently on a break due to COVID-19, was scheduled to open in March. The opening date has since been pushed to May 25, 2021, but avid fans of Princess Diana who have been waiting for the musical to open will now have the chance to watch the Broadway show before its official opening.
Netflix has announced they will be premiering the musical on the streaming service next year. There has been no official date released for the premiere, but it will be available before Diana opens on Broadway.
The producers of Diana shared in a statement, “We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn’t be more excited to finally be able to share out show with the theater lovers everywhere. Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide.”
Diana is directed by Christopher Ashley, who directed Come From Away, and the musical will be filmed without an audience at the Longacre Theater. The original cast will perform the story of the late Princess Diana’s life during her marriage to Prince Charles and divorce.
The announcement from Netflix comes as Disney + has released a taped versions of Broadway plays, such as Hamilton.
