‘Dexter’ Recap: Zach Is Murdered By The Brain Surgeon; Deb Wants To Rejoin Police Force; Dex Asks Hannah To Stick Around
Dexter picks up where it left off last week at the crime scene of Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) neighbor Cassie’s (Bethany Joy Lenz) grisly murder – which he thinks was the result of protégé Zach Hamilton (Sam Underwood) going rogue. While he and Masuka (C.S. Lee) go over the evidence, Dexter grows increasingly concerned that his obsession with Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski) has forced Zach into the brash murder.
After Dexter learns that the blood under Cassie’s fingernails is Zach’s, he pays a visit to Dr. Vogel (Charlotte Rampling) to tell her that Zach needs to get the death penalty at his hands. In her typical eerily smooth manipulative fashion, Vogel tells Dexter it won’t be easy to dispose of Zach since they’ve been bonding. She also uses a healthy serving of guilt about the time he’s spent with Hannah to steer Dexter away from the younger killer.
Despite his own reservations and Vogel’s reproaches, Dexter asks Hannah to join him on a trip to Fiesta Key to find Zach after taking her picture for a new getaway passport. When Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) confronts him about his unhealthy relationship with Hannah, Dexter tries to reassure his sister that he’s got everything under control. A very jealous sounding Deb casts doubt on whether he’s motivated to fix the situation,as he appears blinded by his attraction to Hannah.
Taking the Hannah situation into her own hands, Deb keeps the tracker on Dexter’s car and enlists the help of her boss and wannabe-boyfriend Elway (Sean Patrick Flannery) to locate the femme fatale – who happens to have a quarter million dollar bounty on her head. Hannah and Dexter, however, have already skipped Miami and are enjoying a seafood dinner date in Fiesta Key, where Dexter is opening up about his long history with Vogel and new story with Zach when the police show up and scare them off.
From there, Hannah and Dexter go to Zach’s hotel room, which has been converted into a plastic-covered kill room. When Zach gets back to the room, Dexter accuses him of killing Cassie. After convincingly denying his involvement in her death, Zach explains that the room had been for a high school acquaintance who’d killed a girl after having sex with her. Dexter then opts to help Zach patch up his mistakes in his first code-following murder, while Hannah helps to clear out the hotel room.
When Hannah returns from a visit to the dumpster, she meets Deb with a gun in hand. Deb tries to get Hannah to cuff herself, but she’s having none of it and threatens to expose Dexter if she’s ever arrested. After Deb says she’d never be believed, Hannah tries a different approach, telling Deb she would never hurt Dexter and that Dexter loves both of them. At that moment, both Dex and Zach return to the room, which sends an overwhelmed Deb off on her way. Driving away together – Hannah and Dexter in the front and Zach in the back – an eerie murderous family takes shape.
Where do they go? To the home of the serial killer matriarch of sorts Dr. Vogel for a family dinner with scintillating conversation about Cassie’s murder. Following the dinner, they split up – Vogel takes Zach home and Dexter takes Hannah to her hotel where they end up in bed together. After the tryst, Dexter makes his way home to find Zach waiting for him listening to Vogel’s theme song “Make You Own Kind of Music.” But when he turns the prone Zach’s chair around, he realizes he’s dead and his anterior insular cortex gone. The missing brain part is in a jar on its way to Dr. Vogel.
As the episode winds to a close, Dexter disposes of his late protégé’s body in the bay with all of the other slain murderers before pleading with Hannah not to leave him. Deb, meanwhile, seems determined to rejoin the police force.
Dexter airs Sundays on Showtime at 9/8c.
