‘Derry Girls’ Actress Nicola Coughlan Begs Fans To Stop Body-Shaming Her

Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan has revealed that people have been body-shaming her with daily direct messages.

The 35-year-old actress recently wrote a caption beneath her Instagram mirror selfie from her hotel room in New York City asking fans to keep their opinions about her body to themselves.

“Hello! So just a thing – if you have an opinion about my body please, please don’t share it with me,” she said. “Most people are being nice and not trying to be offensive but I am just one real-life human being and it’s really hard to take the weight of thousands of opinions on how you look being sent directly to you every day. If you have an opinion about me that’s OK, I understand I’m on TV and that people will have things to think and say but I beg you not to send it to me directly.”

Coughlan concluded in her post that she was getting ready for Saturday Night Live and was “delighted” with her hair.

While comments are turned off, the post has received over 112,000 likes.

This is not the first time Coughlan spoke out against body-shaming. In 2018, the star wrote a piece for The Guardian titled “Critics, judge me for my work in Derry Girls and on the stage, not on my body.”

Almost a year ago, she also posted a Twitter thread in response to Amanda Richards who wrote, “The fat girl from Bridgerton is wearing a black cardigan at the Golden Globes, bc no matter how hot and stylish you are, if you’re a fat girl there will always be a black cardigan you think about wearing, then decide against, but ultimately wear bc you feel like you have to.”

Coughlan will return as Clare in the third and final season of Derry Girls later this year. She will also reprise her role as Penelope Featherington for Bridgerton‘s second season which will air this spring on Netflix.
