Dennis Quaid became engaged this week to girlfriend Laura Savoie after just months of dating.

The 65-year-old actor confirmed he and 26-year-old Savoie were dating in June after the two were seen out together. Savoie is reportedly a Ph.D. student at the University of Texas who was previously in a relationship with Jeremy Piven.

Quaid opened up to Extra about his wild proposal to Savoie.

“It happened on the very northernmost point of Oahu, at Turtle Bay,” said the actor. “It was kind of spontaneous. It was very much a surprise.”

Quaid continued: “She was actually taking a selfie of us, and I put the ring in front and said, ‘Will you marry me?’ – and then she fell down.”

The news of Quaid’s engagement also drew a witty reaction from actress Elaine Hendrix, who played Quaid’s gold-digging fiancee Meredith Blake in the classic 1998 comedy The Parent Trap (It’s likely no coincidence that Hendrix’s character was also 26 years old in the film).

“Watch out for those twins,” Hendrix tweeted, referencing the identical sisters Hallie Parker and Annie James, both of whom Lindsay Lohan famously played in the film.

Hendrix wasn’t the only person to respond to Quaid having a new fiancee. Lea Thompson, to whom Quaid was briefly engaged in the 1980s, commented on the vast age difference between Savoie and the actor by tweeting, “She was -10 when I was engaged to him.”

Many other Twitter users joked about how each of Quaid’s fiancees or wives has been younger than the previous one:

Quaid was previously married to Kimberly Buffington from 2004 to 2018, to Meg Ryan from 1991 to 2001 and to P.J. Soles from 1978 to 1983. He also recently dated model Santa Auzins.
