Demi Lovato unexpectedly dropped a new single, “Sober,” on Thursday night, and it seems as though her drug and alcohol abuse issues may be creeping back into her life.
In 2010, Lovato checked into rehab for addiction, self-harm and bulimia when she was a big-time Disney star. This March, the singer celebrated six years of sobriety:
However, “Sober” has some indications of her past vices continuing to haunt her.
“Momma, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore / Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor,” she sings in the chorus. “To the ones who never left me we’ve been down this road before.”
Additionally, the lyric video opens with a hazy view of a room filled with last night’s clothes and empty liquor bottles.
Lovato exposed her most raw regrets in the song, even apologizing to her fans for not being a better role model.
“And I’m sorry for the fans I lost/ Who watched me fall again/ I wanna be a role model/ But I’m only human.”
She finished by assuring she will seek professional help and apologizing to herself for relapsing once again.
“I’m sorry that I’m here again/ I promise I’ll get help/ It wasn’t my intention/ I’m sorry to myself.”
Recently, the singer shot down rumors that she had been drinking again after being pictured with a cup filled with unidentified liquid.
Lovato said, “I don’t have to defend anything but it was Red Bull.”
Reflecting on her journey of sober living, Lovato told Entertainment Tonight last year that her life was in danger when she behaved recklessly.

“What keeps me on this path is there’s a drive that I have to stay sober because I know that my life depends on it,” Lovato said. “If I would have continued down that road, I don’t know if I’d be here today.”
