Both Lovato, 23, and Valderamma, 36, posted a note to Instagram that explained that they had broken up amicably, and will continue on as friends.
“After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship,” the note reads. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends,” the message continued. “We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years. With only love, Wilmer & Demi.”
Lovato and Valderamma made their last public appearance as a couple at the Billboard Music Awards, which were held in Las Vegas on May 22.
According to a source, Lovato has had a tough year, which has included the death of two great-parents and two beloved pets. Now, the singer is turning towards her family and close friends to help her move on from her relationship.
“This hasn’t been an easy year for Demi,” an insider told People, “She’s making sure to surround herself with family and friends after announcing the split.” The insider added, “There was a lot of love between [Demi and Wilmer] – they were always so supportive of each other.”
Lovato and Valderamma celebrated their six-year anniversary together back in January. They had initially started dating in 2010, when Lovato was 18.
