“Confident” singer Demi Lovato has made headlines this week after posting an unedited bikini pic to her Instagram for the first time ever in light of National Cellulite Day.
She admits that other bikini photos she has posted were edited but now, she’s embracing her curves and her body.
“I’m just literally sooooo tired of being ashamed of my body. This is what I got. I want this new chapter in my life to be about being authentic to who I am rather than trying to meet someone else’s standards,” she wrote. “So here’s me, unashamed, unafraid and proud to own a body that has fought through so much and will continue to amaze me when I hopefully give birth one day.”
The star has been open with her struggles in the past. Seeking treatment for an eating disorder in 2010, speaking out concerning mental health and being admitted for a drug overdose in 2018. Now, Lovato is putting it all out there in hopes of encouraging others to do the same.
“Just so everyone’s clear.. I’m not stoked on my appearance BUT I am appreciative of it and sometimes that’s the best I can do. I hope to inspire someone to appreciate their body today too,” the star wrote.
Lovato’s post has received compliments from fans and the media. Since Friday, the photo has received over nine million views and has received thousands of encouraging comments in response. Other stars like Amy Schumer and Ashley Graham, joined in publicly on the praise as well.
And, Lovato’s post encouraged her fans to share their own unedited bikini clad photos to social media which she then reposted on her Instagram story.
“Literally shaking still,” she wrote later in the night. “That was so hard for me to post. But wow .. so blown away by the love and support. let’s be the change we want to see.”
