Demi Lovato has returned to using “She/Her” pronouns after coming out as non-binary last year. She went into her decision and other thoughts about gender fluidity in a wide-reaching interview with Tamara Dhia on Spout Podcast.
Lovato first came out as pansexual and sexually-fluid in March of 2021 and later said she preferred “they/them” pronouns. Back in April of this year, the pop star said she had decided to use both they and she pronouns.
She also touched on her current foray into pop-rock music with her new album Holy Fvck. Lovato related her shifting interests in music genres to her gender identity. “I’m such a fluid person when it comes to my gender, my sexuality, my music, my creativity, it’s like I don’t know where things are gonna take me,” Lovato said.
“Especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy,” Lovato explained. So that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom, and it said ‘Women,’ and ‘Men,’ I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me.
She also added that she felt more like “a human” than either gender and “that’s what they/them is about for me, it’s just about feeling human at your core. Recently I’ve been feeling more feminine.” It’s great to hear a prominent pop star talk frankly about her feelings about gender, as it should be an ordinary and not polarizing discussion.
Holy Fvck will be fully available August 19, 2020. You can listen to its lead single “Skin Of My Teeth,” here, which begins with the blistering lyrics “Demi leaves rehab again / when is this s––t gonna end.”
