Demi Lovato spontaneously suggested a nude photo shoot during an interview with Vanity Fair in her New York hotel.
The singer, who recently lost her great-grandfather, told Vanity Fair that his passing had inspired her to strive to live more in the moment.
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past day, it’s that life is too short,” Lovato told Vanity Fair photographer Patrick Ecclesine. “I”m about to launch an album that finally represents who I truly am. How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don’t give a f—, and this is who I am. I want to show the side of me that’s real, that’s liberated, that’s free. What if we do a photo shoot where it’s totally raw? Super-sexy, but no makeup, no fancy lighting, no retouching, and no clothing. Let’s do it here, let’s do it now.”
Lovato has struggled with her self-image for years, dealing with eating disorders and low self-esteem, and explained how she never believed she would get to a place in her life where she could be completely comfortable in her own skin.
Lovato feels like this photo shoot represents a new time in her life where she can finally be free of that negative self-image. She hopes that her bravery will inspire other women to overcome their fears about their body-images, and to just be comfortable in their own skin. “It’s empowering, and it shows other women that you can get to a place where you can overcome the obstacles of body-image issues, and you can feel comfortable and confident in your skin.”
Lovato’s new album Confident will come out Oct. 16.
