Demi Lovato was one of the young singers who performed with Elton John at the Wiltern in Los Angeles, Calif., Wednesday night.
Lovato got the chance to join John on “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which the iconic singer-songwriter had originally sung with Kiki Dee.
Up and coming Canadian singer Shawn Mendes sung a duet with John on his 1971 hit “Tiny Dancer.” And, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump joined John on the upbeat “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting.”
John was holding the special two-hour concert in LA in advance of the release of his latest album, Wonderful Crazy Night. In addition to playing tracks off what will be his 32nd studio album, John pleased fans by including a number of his better known hits in his setlist, including “Your Song,” “I’m Still Standing” and “Bennie and the Jets.”
In the middle of the concert, John took the opportunity to pay tribute to David Bowie, who recently passed away. John honored the beloved singer by performing the instrumental of one his best known hits – “Space Oddity” – on the piano before seamlessly moving into his own track, “Rocket Man.”
Talking about his self-titled sophomore album, John stated, “The songs were very classically orientated. I didn’t know [what producer] I wanted to use. Then I heard a record which blew me away. It’s called ‘Space Oddity.'”
Gus Dudgeon produced Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” while Paul Buckmaster was responsible for the arrangements. Both men ended up working with John throughout his prolific 70s. “I have David Bowie to thank for that amazing collaboration,” John said before launching into the mashup.
Wonderful Crazy Night will be released Feb. 5.
