Demi Lovato Issues Statement About Her Overdose & Hospitalization

On July 24, 2018, Demi Lovato was hospitalized for an apparent drug overdose. During her stay, multiple fans and friends of the 25-year-old pop star expressed their well-wishes for her recovery and she was released from the hospital on Saturday, August 4, 2018. Lovato’s family members and spokespeople have issued statements to the public about her medical status and wishes for privacy, but it wasn’t until August 5, 2018 that Lovato herself spoke out about her medical emergency.

In a statement on Instagram, Lovato wrote that she has always been “transparent” about her struggles with addiction and that her journey will last for the rest of her life. She thanked her friends, family, team and fans for their love and support and thanked the staff of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for saving her life. “I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery,” Lovato wrote. “The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side.” She ended the post with the statement, “I will keep fighting,” accompanied by a heart emoji.

A source that spoke to People said, “Demi left the hospital over the weekend. She will get continued care at an in-patient rehab facility. At the hospital, she was surrounded by family and friends that support her sobriety. They all want Demi to be the best she can. Demi is surrounded by a lot of love. She has people in her life that really care. She has a long journey ahead, but with all the love, her journey could absolutely be a positive one.” Lovato successfully completed rehab for addiction, bullimia, and self-harm in 2010 and was sober for six years before her relapse.
