New York City’s LaGuardia Airport was closed Thursday, March 5, after a Delta Air Lines plane skidded off the runway due to snowy weather conditions.
The incident occurred at around 11 a.m., when Delta flight 1086 was landing at LaGuardia having come in from Atlanta. While previous landings had gone off without a hitch, the Delta flight appears to have experienced break problems, skidding off the runway and crashing into a fence.
What exactly caused the accident is unknown, and the National Transportation Safety Board has announced that an investigator would be dispatched to survey damage at the scene.
New York City received about three inches of snow on Thursday morning, but reports of freezing rain and other winter-weather hazards suggest that the snow may have frozen over, creating an exceedingly slippery runway.
Delta flight 1086 was carrying 127 passengers and four crew members, all of whom were able to exit the plane safely. According to FDNY, 28 people suffered minor injuries and five were transported to a hospital.
“Customers deplaned via aircraft slides and have moved to the terminal on buses. Our priority is ensuring our customers and crew members are safe. Delta will work with all authorities and stakeholders to look into what happened in this incident,” said Delta in a statement.
LaGuardia initially closed both runways, but has since reopened one, allowing for limited air traffic. Meanwhile, passengers have been sharing photos and details of the accident on Twitter and Instagram. New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell was on the flight, and he also uploaded a few photos to Instagram.
Reality star Jaime Primak, who appears on Bravo’s Jersey Belle, also appears to have been on the flight and tweeted about the terrifying experience, writing, “We just crash landed at LGA. I’m terrified.”
