DeLorean DMC-12, Made Famous By ‘Back To The Future,’ Goes Back Into Production

Famed for its innovative design (gull-winged doors!) and use as a time-machine in the classic Back to the Future, the DeLorean DMC-12 will resume production again after 35 years. The DeLorean DMC-12 was in the market between 1981-83 and was the only model which Jean DeLorean’s DeLorean Motor Company ever produced. While DMC was originally based in Ireland, the company now resides in Humble, Tex. So, for the first time ever, the DeLorean will be manufactured in the U.S.

“We’ve been wanting this to happen,” DeLorean CEO Stephen Wynne said to KPRC2.

The majority of the cars DMC has right now are customer-owned cars in for restoration. But Wyne estimates that they have enough parts to build around 300 replica 1982 DeLoreans now they have gotten the federal approval to do so.

“It’s huge for us,” DeLorean told KPRC2, “It means we’re back as a car company again.”

Current refurbished models are going for $45,000-$55,000. Wynne is hoping to sell the new ones for under $100,000.

Expect to see the first new DeLorean in 2017.
