‘Days Of Out Lives’ Actor Francisco San Martin Dies By Suicide At 39

On Thursday, actor Francisco San Martin, 39, best known for his role as Dario Hernandez on Days of Our Lives, died in his Los Angeles home from a “ligature hanging.”

The medical examiner did not give any further details about San Martin’s suicide.

San Martin was born in Mallorca, Spain, on August 27, 1985. He grew up in Montana, where he got an early start acting in children’s theater productions. As a teenager, he returned to Madrid where he began to work as a model while taking acting classes.

In addition to his 16-episode stint on Days of Our Lives, San Martin is known for his role as Mateo in The Bold and the Beautiful. He also had an arc on Jane the Virgin as Fabian, the title character’s sensitive telenovela love interest. His most recent role was in the 2022 short film Dot.

In a 2016 interview on casting, San Martin shared, “I grew up watching Days, which was crazy…when I was living in Montana when I was a kid from the age of 5 to 13, I would watch Days all the time and have these memories of Bo and Hope being trapped in an avalanche. I got such a kick out of it. I was pretty young. I would watch it every time I got back from school.”

In a 2016 interview with Afterbuzz TV’s Spotlight, San Martin further detailed his casting experience: “It was kind of insane because they booked me for an under-five role…I literally walked in and auditioned for Marnie [Saitta, Casting Director] and she saw me in this picture when I went to Mozambique, to Africa, to take some photos of some kids, she said, ‘Well, I think you’re perfect for the role, blah blah blah,’ so I read the lines, it was very easy…I’ve never heard of that…Those are the kind of Hollywood stories that never happen.”

San Martin’s Days of Our Lives co-star Camila Banus, who played Dario’s sister Gabby, paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing, “Pepe, what can I say but I love you and rest in peace, my friend. Love you mucho mucho mucho. I wish I had told you more.”
