‘Dawson’s Creek’ Star James Van Der Beek Reveals He’s Fighting Colorectal Cancer
James Van Der Beek, best known for his role on Dawson’s Creek, has revealed his battle with colorectal cancer.
The 47-year-old actor shared that he has been privately dealing with the diagnosis. “I have colorectal cancer,” Van Der Beek told People. “I’ve been taking steps to resolve it with the support of my incredible family.”
The actor expressed a positive outlook, adding, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
While Van Der Beek didn’t disclose further details about his treatment, he highlighted the unwavering support of his family, including his wife, Kimberly, and their six children.
Colorectal cancer originates in the colon or rectum, which together form the large intestine in the digestive system, according to the American Cancer Society. Treatments for this cancer typically include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, depending on the stage and progression of the disease.
His openness about the diagnosis coincides with his involvement in The Real Full Monty, a Fox special aiming to raise awareness for various cancers. The show will culminate with male celebrities, including Van Der Beek, performing to promote cancer screening and research.
In addition to raising awareness, Van Der Beek is set to star in the upcoming Tubi original film Sidelined: The QB and Me, premiering Nov. 29. Balancing his professional commitments, he continues to focus on family, recently celebrating his son Jeremiah’s third birthday with a heartfelt Instagram post.
“Three years old today,” he wrote. “We had no idea how much we needed you. But YOU did. You are once again proof to us that kids come into this world with their own thing; their own essence, appetites, and personality, and you have never been shy about letting us know exactly who you are, and what you want.”
“You always want to help, and I’m constantly amazed by your emotional intelligence and what you are able to comprehend and anticipate,” he added. “Thank you for barging your way into our lives… We love you bubs. Beyond grateful to have those ringlets in my life and to get to be your dad.”
