The cult favorite Twin Peaks is finally being revived for a new series on Showtime, coming this year. Creator David Lynch and Showtime president David Nevins sat down with the Television Critics Association to give some much-anticipated information.
The original series lasted two seasons between 1990 and 1991, followed by a feature film in 1992 called Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. The show gained a massive following, but was ahead of its time and canceled prematurely.
Now, much to fans’ delight, Lynch has teamed up with Showtime to create a limited series event that will air May 21 at 9 pm. The series will feature a two-hour long premiere, followed by the third and fourth episodes being released online the following day for Showtime and Showtime Anytime subscribers. Otherwise, the next two episodes will air back-to-back on May 28.
The first season will be 18 hours and is likely to run for 16 weeks. Lynch wrote and directed the entire first season. The rough cuts of all 18 hours are in, but Lynch says, “There’s a lot of work left to do before it goes on air.” Lynch also recommended watching the associated Twin Peaks movie from 1992. “It’s the story of Laura Palmer’s last seven days and very much important with this,” he said.
In addition, all the original episodes are available to stream on Netflix, for first-time viewers, or those who may want to rewatch the series before the revival comes out. Star Madchen Amick, however, said for fans not to try to figure out what to expect. “You don’t want to give it away,” she said. “Some of the characters aren’t where you think they might be 25 years later… We broke the mold for television [in the 90s]. We’re about to break it again.”
Some old characters will be returning, as will some new ones. Lynch himself handpicked the cast. “You meet people. You see pictures of people,” Lynch described. “You see videos of people and you get a sense of looking at them or hearing them that they are right or wrong for a particular part.”
