David Letterman will come out of retirement for a new Netflix interview. series.
Letterman, the former host of CBS’s Late Show, will return to television with a new, six-episode run in a long-form interview show. Each episode will be an hour long. Letterman, 70, hosted late night talk shows for 33 years, from his own Late Night to the Late Show.
Ever since retiring from The Late Show, Letterman says, “Everybody would come to me and say, ‘What do you want to do?’ And I kept saying, ‘Well, jeez, I did what I wanted to do.'” The new, untitled series, however, “feels like exactly what I want at this stage in my life.”
Contrary to how it sounds, this new series will not be very similar to Letterman’s old gigs. “I can’t stop talking, so there’s no time limit,” he said, explaining the format. “I can just talk the ears off people, until they call the police. As with many things, I’m coming from a position of great ignorance, so the well of questioning is pretty much infinite. It’s a perfect fit for me.”
He said as a way to get his guests, he would “write down a list of people that you know you’re not going to be able to talk to, and those are the people that I want to try to get to talk to.” He also shared they’ve already booked one guest “that I’m delighted about, that I’m told I can’t reveal.”
