David Letterman’s final night hosting The Late Show has been announced.
Leslie Moonves, the president and CEO of the CBS Corporation, announced Wednesday that Letterman will host The Late Show for the final time on May 20, 2015.
“David Letterman has given to all of us a remarkable legacy of achievement and creative brilliance that will never be forgotten,” Moonves said in a statement. “It’s going to be tough to say goodbye, but I know we will all cherish the shows leading up to Dave’s final broadcast in May.”
Letterman first announced that he’d soon be departing The Late Show back in April 2014. “I said ‘Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring,” Letterman told his live studio audience.
Not long after Letterman’s announcement, CBS revealed that Colbert Report’s Stephen Colbert would be filling his shoes on The Late Show.
“The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Colbert Report, will succeed David Letterman as the host of The Late Show, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast,” the statement read.
“Colbert’s premiere date as host of the Late Show will be announced after Mr. Letterman determines a timetable for his final broadcasts in 2015,” the statement continued. “Specific creative elements, as well as the producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted Late Show, will be determined and announced at a later date.”
Letterman has been a fixture in late night TV for more than 30 years. He hosted NBC’s Late Night for 11 years, and then when he got passed over for The Tonight Show for Jay Leno, he took over The Late Show on CBS. He’s been hosting the late night program for the last 22 years.
