The teen heartthrob from The Partridge Family, David Cassidy, has revealed that he is suffering from dementia and will be retiring as a result.
The star spoke about his health following a concert in California, where he struggled to remember his own song lyrics. He also seemed to lose his balance and fall off the stage.
Cassidy, 66, played the eldest of the five kids on The Partridge Family from 1970-1974. He described losing both his grandfather and his mother to the disease. “I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming,” he said. “In the end, the only way I knew she recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room… I feared I would end up that way.”
Earlier in the month, Cassidy announced on his website that he would be finishing out his scheduled tours through 2017 before retiring. But now he has declared he is done performing. “I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I’ve been, without any distractions,” he said. “I want to love. I want to enjoy life.”
The star has also struggled with substance abuse. He was charged with a DUI in 2010, and again in 2013 and 2014. Following the third arrest, his wife filed for divorce. In 2015, Cassidy had to file for bankruptcy, and was charged with a hit-and-run.
TMZ reported on the concert this week, thinking Cassidy was just drunk and slurring his words, but his interview tells us it is much more serious. See the video below.
