David Canary, who was best known for starring on soap opera All My Children, died Nov. 16. He was 77.
Canary died of natural causes at an assisted living home in Connecticut, his family confirmed.
On All My Children, Canary played Chandler twins Adam and Stuart, beginning in 1984. As Adam, he embodied the sinister nature of the Pine Valley family’s wealthy patriarch, while he also played the kinder brother Stuart, who Adam had locked away in the Chandler mansion.
Canary retired from acting full-time in 2010, but returned to All My Children for the show’s final episode on TV in September 2011. While playing the Chandler brothers, Canary earned five daytime Emmys and 16 nominations.
“My career on All My Children has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally,” Canary said upon retiring, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. “I have cherished each and every moment. I would like to thank all the fans who have tuned in throughout the years. Their love and support has meant the world to me.”
Canary got his start in theater, moving up from regional productions to his Broadway debut opposite Colleen Dewhurst in Great Day in the Morning.
Outside of All My Children, Canary appeared on TV in Peyton Place, Gunsmoke, One Life to Live, Hawaii Five-O and Bonanza. More recently he had made appearances on Law & Order, Touched by an Angel and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Canary’s big screen credits include Hombre, The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and Johnny Firecloud.
Canary is survived by his wife, Maureen; son, Christopher; daughter, Kathryn; and grandchildren.
