The First Doctor will make an appearance in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special.
The role of the First Doctor was originally played by William Hartnell in the 1963 series, who passed away in 1975. His role will be reprised for the special by David Bradley, who previously played the actor after his death in a Doctor Who behind-the-scenes TV movie.
The special will mark 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi‘s final episode in the franchise. It will also be his companion Bill Potts final appearance as well.
“David was convincing as Hartnell, it’s exciting he’s back,” an insider said. “Four years ago it took all the previous Doctors to save Gallifrey, so maybe some of the others will also pop up in Capaldi’s swansong. It’s great that the first Doctor will be there to help out during those all-important regeneration moments.”
In the special, the first and twelfth Doctors must work together to save their home planet of Gallifrey by moving it to another dimension. Then the Time Lord will regenerate into the 13th Doctor. The next actor for the role is as of yet unconfirmed.
