Sotheby’s art auction featuring David Bowie’s private art collection brought in over $30 million in the first round of bidding.

“David always enjoyed sharing the works in the collection,” Sotheby’s noted in a statement quoting the Bowie estate. “Loaning to museums and actively supporting the art and artists that were part of his world. While the family have kept certain pieces of particular significance, now was the time for others to share David’s love for these remarkable works and let them live on.”

Many of these items garnered more than doubled their estimates, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s painting “Air Power,” sold for $8.96 million including premium, original estimates ranged from $2.5 million-3.5 million.

Approximately 350 items are to be auctioned, including paintings, sketches, sculptures, design furniture, and even functioning electronic sculptures. Another auction will take place on Nov. 11.
