David Bowie’s shocking death after a secret cancer battle has led his devoted fans to set up tributes and hold events to celebrate his life and contribution to music.

David Bowie Tributes

On Monday, after news broke about Bowie’s death, flowers, cards and albums started to accumulate under the David Bowie mural in Brixton, London, the town where Bowie was born.

“When this mural went up a few years ago, it just made me so proud to be a Brixtonian,” said local Marc Thompson. “To see this tribute growing is just a beautiful, beautiful thing for this area … to know that one of our boys is a global superstar.”

Outside Brixton’s Ritzy cinema, a street party was organized where fans could come together and enjoy Bowie’s music.

“Bowie’s time on this earth may be over, but he sure left us some great music,” the event’s organizer said on Facebook, according to the Evening Standard. “Today is a day to gather together and celebrate.”

Another party, held at a pub down the street from where Bowie was born, also planned to play Bowie’s expansive catalogue of music.

“Tonight, we’re going to drink, dance and celebrate Brixton’s finest son with a night of David Bowie music…,” said the Brixton Blog, which organized the party. “We’ll be playing his hits, album tracks, obscurities and more – plus some of his musical influences and the artists he inspired – and screening videos and photos of the great man.”

Across the Atlantic in the U.S., fans started a tribute outside Bowie’s Manhattan apartment, where he had lived with his wife, model Iman.
