Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets were officially unveiled as members of Inter Miami CF on Sunday. The two star players were welcomed by a sold-out home crowd at DRV PNK Stadium. Messi will wear his famed No. 10 jersey while Busquets was presented with the No. 5.
The event was delayed for two hours due to heavy rain and lightning but eventually began to the tune of “The World Is Yours to Take” by Tears for Fears featuring Lil Baby.
Messi spoke to the crowd in Spanish after his introduction. “Personally, I believe that my teammates are going to give everything to build this project and I am very happy to have chosen this city, to have chosen this project and I have no doubt that we are going to have a great time and we are going to experience very nice things.”
Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas and co-owner David Beckham also talked, expressing that this moment was a new chapter for the club and something they had imagined since investing in Inter Miami. Beckham also stated that he always dreamed of bringing the “best players in the world” to Miami and making soccer more popular in the U.S.
The celebration reunited Messi and Busquets, who had played together at Barcelona in Spain for more than a decade.
Messi skyrocketed the demand for Inter Miami tickets with prices rising by 1,000% after his signing was announced in June.
