Buff brothers Dave and James Franco are starring in The Disaster Artist, a movie about the making of one of the best worst films ever made, The Room.
The Francos attended a photocall event for the film at the 65th San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain. The movie is based on Greg Sestero‘s best selling tell-all book about the making the cult film. Already The Disaster Artist is earning a 94% on Rottentomatoes. James plays lead Tommy Wiseau, who starred in and created the original film, and Dave will play co-star Sestero’s character Mark. Other stars include Seth Rogan, Josh Hutcherson, Alison Brie, and Zac Efron.
“The Disaster Artist is a riot—and, paradoxically considering its subject matter, the best and most assured movie [James] Franco has ever directed,” wrote Slate’s Sam Adams in a review. “In the lead role, he nails Wiseau’s thickly unplaceable Eastern European accent, but his portrayal never slides into caricature—no mean feat, considering that Wiseau is virtually a freestanding caricature on his own.”
The Disaster Artist played well at the Toronto International Film Festival as well as as a work-in-progress at the SXSW Festival in March. The film could actually be in Oscar contention, considering the biopic of terrible famed Hollywood filmmaker Ed Wood won two golden statues in 1994.
As The Verge‘s Bryan Bishop put it, “If the stupefying mystery of how The Room could even exist is part of its weird appeal, would a movie explaining that ruin the fun? Not in the slightest. Franco has created a movie that is not just hilarious, accessible, and an incredible amount of fun in its own right, but it had me more eager to revisit Wiseau’s train wreck than ever before.”
The Disaster Artist comes out Dec. 1, more than 14 years since The Room was released. See the trailer below.
