The Foo Fighters were the first to perform at the Garden since COVID-19 shut down the arena in March 2020. The audience was made up of over 15,000 attendees all of whom provided proof of vaccination.

The comedian wearing dark sunglasses took to lead vocals with the rock band covering Radio Head’s classic “Creep.” The song seems to be Chappelle’s go-to karaoke song, as he had previously covered the song in 2017 with Ed Sheeran at an intimate performance and at an SNL after-party.

After the Grammy Award winner’s performance, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters joked, “Thank you so much ladies and gentlemen we’ll see you next time! You want me to do shit after Dave Chapelle? There is no fucking way!”

The band, which made history bringing New York City’s concert scene back to life after 15 months of shutdown, had a 24-song setlist including hits like “The Pretender,” “Learn to Fly” and “Times Like These.” They used their encore to cover the Bee Gees‘ classic “You Should Be Dancing.” The rock band will be releasing an album, Hail Satin, paying tribute to the Bee Gees covering their songs under the name the Dee Gees, which is set to release July 17.

In a statement, Grohl announced the show a few weeks ago saying, “we’ve been waiting for this day for over a year. And Madison Square Garden is going to feel that hard. New York, get ready for a long ass night of screaming our heads off together to 26 years of Foos.”

The Foo Fighters will continue their 26th Anniversary Tour this summer and are set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later this year. The band also released their new album, Medicine at Midnight, in February.
