Comedian Dave Chappelle is set to return to Netflix with a new comedy special, The Closer.
The teaser trailer for the special hints that Chappelle won’t be backing down from his controversial style of humor.
“Comedians have a responsibility to speak recklessly,” Chappelle says in the trailer. “Sometimes the funniest thing to say is mean. Remember, I’m not saying it to be mean. I’m saying it because it’s funny.”
Chappelle faced criticism over his last Netflix special Sticks and Stones which made fun of the #MeToo movement, the LGBTQ+ community and took aim at cancel culture, as well as making fun of other groups of people.
People had mixed reactions to the special, with some calling it offensive and accusing the comedian of “punching down,” while others defended the anything-goes style of comedy Chappelle tapped into and compared it to shows like Family Guy or South Park which have been on for years.
In the Q&A section of Sticks and Stones, Chappelle said that he understands that his brand of humor might offend people, but defends his work as good-natured joking.
“If you’re in a group that I make fun of, just know that I probably only make fun of you because I see myself in you,” he said.
The Closer will be coming to Netflix on Oct. 5.
