Audiences at Chris Rock‘s Total Blackout Tour show last night were in for a real treat, when comedic genius Dave Chappelle joined Rock on stage for a 90-minute set.
The show took place at New Orlean’s Saenger Theatre, and was the first of Rock’s three nights at the venue, as part of his tour. The Total Blackout Tour is Rock’s first full-scale world tour in a decade.
Chappelle, who had just released two stand-up specials on Netflix last Tuesday, made a surprise appearance when he walked onstage after intermission. His appearance prompted a standing ovation.
“Tonight, you are all part of a social experiment,” said Chappelle. “Stranger things have happened in New Orleans.”
Rock later joked on Instagram that the night was like “Watch the Throne Part 2.”
The crowd was exuberant at the star’s unexpected appearance, and many took to social media to express their elation.
Unfortunately, phones were not allowed inside the venue, so it was difficult to see much, if anything, or the set, other than Twitter and Instagram posts. But through reports from The New Orleans Advocate and The Times-Picayune, we know that Rock and Chappelle paired to joke about Donald Trump. Other hot-topics of the set included: Zika, Caitlyn Jenner, Rock’s divorce, Chappelle’s wife, porn star Alexis Texas, Chappelle’s Netflix specials and feminism.
The night’s celebrity power was not just limited to Chappelle and Rock — renowned comedians Jeff Ross and Eric Andre also performed sets of their own. Tyra Banks and Rosario Dawson, who dates Andre, were also attendees of the event.
Chappelle was reported to have said, “I just realized this might be one of the flyest things I’ve ever been a part of. The only thing better would be if Eddie Murphy lowered from the rafters.”
