Daryl Hall Confirms The End Of Iconic Pop Duo Hall & Oates Over Legal Battle

Singer Daryl Hall confirmed the end of the pop-rock duo Hall & Oates. Hall said a reunion between him and fellow singer John Oates is not happening soon or at all. Known for hit songs like, “Maneater” and “Rich Girl,” the duo formed in 1970 and have an extensive career spanning over 50 years.

“I haven’t had a creative relationship with John for at least 25 years,” Hall told Variety about Oates. “We didn’t write songs together. We didn’t do anything together except perform live shows. We had an arrangement that I couldn’t play my solo songs on stage with Hall & Oates—and now I get to.”

Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates in November 2023 over financial disputes. Hall accused Oates of “the ultimate partnership betrayal” after Oates planned to sell his share of their co-owned company, Whole Oats Enterprises LLP. Hall also filed a restraining order against Oates.

“It hit me by surprise,” Hall said. “All I can say is people change and sometimes you don’t really know someone like you thought you did.”

In April, Oates said he had “moved” on from the duo. However, Oates has also stated he’s “always open” to reconnecting with Hall.

“Daryl Hall is an amazing individual. He is one of the great, great songwriters of all time, and without a doubt, one of the great singers of all time,” Oates said to Rolling Stone. “I would never say anything negative about him. But we have a different strategy for our lives, and we have a different strategy for our business lives as well as our personal lives.”
