On Wednesday, the cap-wearing “Captain,” Daryl Dragon of the popular 70s’ duo The Captain & Tennille, died at the age of 76.
According to Dragon’s publicist, Harlan Boll, Dragon passed away due to renal failure at a hospice in Prescott, Arizona, with his longtime musical partner and ex-wife, Toni Tennille, by his side.
“He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly. I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him,” Tennille said in a statement to Fox News.
Some of the duos best-known songs include, “Muskrat Love,” “Do That to Me One More Time” and “Love Will Keep Us Together.” The two first met in the early 1970s and began performing together, with Tennille singing and Dragon on the keyboards. In 1975, the two got married and covered the Neil Sedaka-Howard Greenfield song “Love Will Keep Us Together, which became their breakout record, earning them a Grammy for record of the year.

In 2014, things took a turn and Dragon and Tennille divorced after nearly 40 years of marriage, but they remained close until Dragon’s death, with Tennille even moving back to Arizona to help take care of him.
Los Angeles native, Dragon was the son of Oscar-winning composer Carmen Dragon and singer Eloise Dragon. Before meeting Tennille, he played keyboard for The Beach Boys, which led to him being given the nickname “caption” by lead singer Mike Love because of his passion for wearing sailor hats while on stage.
Boll has asked that any donation being made in Dragon’s name be made to organizations doing research on brain diseases and conditions.
