Although it has been years in the planning, the film adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower is finally here… almost. After teasing the trailer on Monday, Sony released the full trailer on Tuesday. The film will be in theaters August 4, 2017.

The Dark Tower will serve as a sort of sequel to the eight-book series by King, rooted in many of the same characters and with many of the same ideas and themes. In the novels, a character named the Gunslinger is on a quest to find the Dark Tower which is controlled by the most evil man in Mid-World, the Man in Black. The trailer for the film suggests that the Gunslinger (Idris Elba) is in control of the tower – which happens to protect both the real world and Mid-World – and the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey) wants to destroy it.

The trailer also focuses on Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) a boy from the real world who has dreams about the Gunslinger, his enemy, and the tower. He is told that his dreams are only dreams and that none of it is real but he quickly proves those people wrong. Jake teams up with the Gunslinger in Mid-World and the two of them try to defeat the Man in Black. Unfortunately, as the Man in Black says, “Death always wins.”

The film was written and directed by Nikolaj Arcel (writer of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Both J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard were said, at different times, to direct the film but both had to drop out.

A TV mini-series is expected to follow the release of the film and will cover The Dark Tower‘s backstory. Elba and Taylor will both reprise their roles for the series, which is expected to be more closely related to the book series.
