An unafraid snail ventured out onto a crocodile’s snout and peered into its open jaws, a moment captured on film by Andri Priyadi.
To be fair, the snail’s entire body equalled the length of the snout, but both animals seemed completely unfazed by the interaction. Priyadi works as a graphic designer in South Jakarta, Indonesia, where the curious sighting took place.
Adult saltwater crocodiles can grow up to 17 feet long and weigh up to 1,000 pounds, but this croc had definitely not reached maturity, and appeared to be just around 30 centimeters. Still, it took the snail about 10 minutes to slither the length of the reptile.
“The branch was already on the ground where the crocodile, which was only a baby, was resting. I watched the crocodile basking on the wood when I spotted the snail moving close by and eventually onto the crocodile. I think it was quite a unique animal encounter,” said Priyadi. “The snail was traveling on the ground when it started moving onto the branch and then got up onto the body of the crocodile and continued up to its jaw… I was very pleased to spot the two of them. I think these moments in the animal kingdom are quite rare which is why I started taking photos. The snail seemed to be quite cool about being on a crocodile and once it reached the end of the crocodile it looked like it was checking out the crocodile’s teeth. Eventually he turned around and went back the way he came.”
