The Price Is Right raised a few eyebrows on Tuesday after awarding a handicapped contestant, Danielle Perez, a treadmill.
Perez was all smiles as she made her way to Drew Carey on The Price Is Right stage in her wheelchair, and she remained nothing but positive when the prizes – a new treadmill and walk-in sauna – were unveiled. Perez’s excitement only grew when she guessed the correct price tag and was awarded both prizes.
Viewers at home were quick to comment on the somewhat awkward moment, creating the hashtag #ThePriceIsWrong on Twitter and helping the video go viral. Perez, on the other hand, was quick to laugh the entire thing off. An aspiring standup comedian, Perez took to Twitter to turn herself into a meme, writing, “when you win a treadmill on national TV, but have no feet.”
Perez has continued to joke about the treadmill prize on Twitter, assuring the public that she holds no hard feelings. When one viewer tweeted, “Lady in wheelchair won a treadmill on The Price is Right today. I laughed a little, but then felt bad. #ThePriceIsWrong,” Perez responded, “Well I won the treadmill and I laughed A LOT.”
Even Price Is Right host Carey has joined in on the fun, re-tweeting Perez’s responses to media outlets suggesting the segment was “wrong.”
Perez, 31, lost both her legs in a car accident eleven years ago, and says she is hoping to use the treadmill if she gets prosthetics. “I’d really like to use prosthetics in the future. I cannot wait. I’m very much looking forward to that day,” she said.
