Daniel Day-Lewis Spotted In Rare Public Appearance 6 Years After Retiring From Acting

Daniel Day-Lewis, 66, was photographed in public with his wife, director Rebecca Miller, in New York City for the first time in years this week.

Since the Oscar-winning actor’s retirement in 2017, he has kept away from the limelight.

But Day-Lewis was spotted while walking in West Village, wearing a pair of yellow sweatpants from the skateboarding brand One Gig, a blue striped shirt and a black jacket and baseball cap. The actor also wore a silver necklace and a pair of black sunglasses.

After the actor’s retirement was announced, his representative at the time, Leslee Dart, stated, “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Day-Lewis is the first actor to win three Oscars in the Best Actor category. He took home the award for My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007) and Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln (2012).

Day-Lewis’ last movie, Phantom Thread, reunited him with director Paul Thomas Anderson. The film earned him another Oscar nomination for Best Actor, but he ultimately lost to Gary Oldman for his role in Darkest Hour.

Following his retirement, Day-Lewis told W Magazine that he didn’t know that he would stop acting after making Phantom Thread. Speaking about his decision at the time, he said he hadn’t yet “figured it out.” He told the magazine: “There’s something of the responsibility of the artist that hung over me. I need to believe in the value of what I’m doing. The work can seem vital. Irresistible, even. And if an audience believes it, that should be good enough for me. But, lately, it isn’t.”
