'Dancing With The Stars' Recap: Aly Raisman Ends The Night On Top
Dancing With the Stars returned this week with the theme “best year of your life,” which challenged the stars to incorporate 15-second solos into their routine to celebrate that year.
Aly Raisman, the night’s frontrunner, chose 2012, the year she competed with the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team and won the gold at the London Olympics. She danced a Contemporary routine with Mark Balas to David Guetta’s “Titanium” that earned her the season-high so far of 27 points.
Previous frontrunners Kellie Pickler and Zendaya Coleman also gave performances that were praised by the judges. Pickler and her partner, Derek Hough, danced a Rhumba as Pickler’s husband, Kyle Jacobs, sang “Say I Do.” The former American Idol contestant was celebrating 2011, the year she got married. Coleman danced a Samba to Beyonce’s “Love on Top” with pro Val Chmerkovskiy, celebrating 2009, the year she made it in Hollywood. Picker and Coleman ended the night tied for second.
D.L Hughley bounced back this week, celebrating the ‘70s with a Fox Trot to Etta James' “I Just Want to Make Love to You” with Cheryl Burke. Also getting more positive feedback from the judges this week was Andy Dick. His Viennese Waltz to Leonard Cohen’s "Hallelujah," dedicated to his 15-year-old daughter, was to celebrate 2013, the year he got sober. His performance brought Carrie Ann Inaba to tears.
Jacoby Jones and Karina Smiroff danced a Fox Trot to “Watching You” by Rodney Atkins’s for 2012; the year Jones’ son was born. Sean Lowe and Ingo Redemacher each performed Viennese Waltzes and dedicated them to the years that the met their wives. They danced to Jason Mraz’s “I Won’t Give Up” and Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years,” respectively, and earned similarly average scores from the judges.
Back at the bottom of the barrel were boxer Victor Ortiz and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Vanderpump. Ortiz celebrated 2011, the year he won the WBC Welterweight championship, with a Paso Doble to Queen’s “We Will Rock You" that failed to impress the judges. Vanderpump, also celebrating 2011, danced a Cha Cha to Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration” for the year her daughter got married.
Dancing With the Stars will return tonight for its results show on ABC at 8/7c.
