‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 24, Episode 5 Recap: Simones Biles Shines, Erika Jayne Falls On Disney Night

Disney night on Dancing with the Stars brought out the best in Simone Biles and Sasha Farber, but proved to be a poor one for Erika Jayne and Gleb Savchenko.

DANCING WITH THE STARS RECAP

The evening stared off with a visit from alum Alfonso Ribeiro and an opening number of Disney classics. Then we jump into a foxtrot from Rashad Jennings and Emma Slater to “Evermore” from the new Beauty and the Beast soundtrack. Jennings had proper technique but judges felt the dance was missing that spark. They were given a 32/40.

Next up were Nick Viall and Peta Murgatroyd who attempted to make Pinocchio sexy with a jazz routine to the film’s “I’ve Got No Strings.” The fun jivey number earned the pair a 34/40.

Jayne and Savchenko did a Viennese waltz to Sia’s “Unforgettable” from Finding Dory. Jayne has been struggling in the past weeks she admits as she cries into her partner’s chest in the pre-dance video. She also loves the song she’s dancing too this week and hopes that connection will help her, and it appears to. Despite getting just a 32/40, this is Jayne’s best routine so far.

Then Heather Morris and Alan Bersten dance a jazz number to “For the First Time in Forever” from Frozen. The routine gets mixed reviews from the judges, with some saying it was a “missed opportunity.” Julianne Hough, however, loved how performance-heavy it was. Despite the mixed thoughts, Morris and Bersten earn a 34/40.

Bonner Bolton and Sharna Burgess are next and earn the lowest score of the night so far with a 30/40. They perform a tango to “When Can I See You Again?” from Wreck It Ralph. The judges agree the dancing is just not dynamic enough, in physicality and emotion.

Next up are Normani Kordei and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, who perform a difficult paso doblé to Mulan‘s “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” Donny Osmond performs the song live in a dazzling blazer. The routine combines martial arts and dance elements, and the performance is fantastic. The superb dance garners a whopping 39/40.

David Ross and Lindsay Arnold then performed a jive to “Ride” from Cars 3. While Ross manages to keep up with his feisty partner, his kicks are just a little less than sharp. Surprisingly to the dancers and to the audience, the pair earn only a 29/40.

Nancy Kerrigan and Artem Chigvintsev performed a jazz routine to “That’s How You Know” from Enchanted. Despite being nervous that she wouldn’t be able to keep up with her backup dancers, Kerrigan dances effortlessly. They get a 36/40.

And finally Biles and Farber do a contemporary routine to close out the show. They perform to “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, with actress Auli’i Cravalho singing live. Seems like this pair will always be placed in the finale spot, but with good reason. The Olympian and her partner earn themselves a 38/40.

Despite Ross and Arnold getting the lowest score, they aren’t even in danger of leaving the show. That unfortunate honor goes to Jayne and Savchenko, and Viall and Murgatroyd. And then ones to say goodbye are Jayne and Savchenko.

Tune in next week for the “Boy Band versus Girl Group” theme week.
