Daisy Ridley Defends ‘Star Wars’ Character Rey Against Charges She’s A ‘Mary Sue’

During MTV podcast Happy, Sad, ConfusedDaisy Ridley defended her character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, stating that labeling her a “Mary Sue” is “sexist.”

Fans have been buzzing about the events of the movie, but especially about certain ones featuring Ridley’s character Rey. There are a few scenes that made fans feel that she is a Mary Sue – a perfect character to the point of being unrealistic – getting out of tight situations with little to no effort. The main issues raised were how she could hypnotize a soldier without prior knowledge of the force, outmatch main her antagonist Kylo Ren who has been training for years, and overall how she could use the force so well with little to no training and during such a short period of time.

“The Mary Sue thing in itself is sexist because it’s the name of a woman,” Ridley said. “Everyone was saying that Luke had the exact same [capabilities]. I think Rey is incredibly vulnerable, and nothing she’s doing is for the greater good. She’s just doing what she thinks is the right thing. And she doesn’t want to do some of it, but she feels compelled to do it. So for me, I was just confused.”
