American gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik is making waves both on and off the pommel horse, embracing his newfound internet fame while celebrating a historic team bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Nedoroscik and teammates Brody Malone and Asher Hong appeared on NBC’s Today show Monday, fresh off their podium finish in the men’s team final. The U.S. men’s squad hadn’t medaled in the event since 2008, making Sunday’s performance particularly significant.
During the interview, hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie addressed the viral moment that has turned Nedoroscik into an online sensation. A photo of the gymnast wearing his glasses moments before competition sparked numerous memes and comparisons to Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent.
“I think they’re awesome,” Nedoroscik said of the memes, adding with a laugh, “I’m representing people that wear glasses well.”
The 25-year-old Massachusetts native explained the mental preparation behind his now-famous pose. “I’m doing my breathing exercises,” he said. “We always try to keep our heart rate down and through that five minutes I’m sitting there, I’m just visualizing my routine over and over… that’s all I’m doing in my head.”
Nedoroscik, who borrowed Kotb’s sunglasses for the interview due to light sensitivity, also shed light on competing without his signature eyewear. “It’s not necessarily clear, but the thing about pommel horse is if I keep them on, they’re gonna fly somewhere,” he explained. “When I go up on the pommel horse, it’s all about feeling the equipment. I don’t even really see when I’m doing my gymnastics. It’s all in the hands — I can feel everything.”
The gymnast’s calm demeanor and distinctive look have resonated with fans online. Social media users have praised Nedoroscik’s “nerves of steel” and dubbed the viral image “iconic.”
