Trump Says He ‘Hopes’ That The Economy Crashes In The ‘Next 12 Months’ Before He Serves His Possible Second Term

Former President Donald Trump said that he hoped a financial crash would occur this year, as he believed it would give him a chance to win a second term as president.

“When there’s a crash, I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president – I just don’t want to be Herbert Hoover,” Trump told conservative commentator Lou Dobbs in an interview on the right-wing platform Lindell TV.

Hoover was president during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the beginning of the Great Depression.

President Joe Biden‘s reelection campaign slammed Trump for harming the middle class for his political benefit.

“Donald Trump should just say he doesn’t give a d— about people, because that’s exactly what he’s telling the American people when he says he hopes the economy crashes,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement. “In his relentless pursuit of power and retribution, Donald Trump is rooting for a reality where millions of Americans lose their jobs and live with the crushing anxiety of figuring out how to afford basic needs.”

“He’s the only president other than Herbert Hoover who actually lost jobs in a four-year period,” Biden stated during a campaign fundraiser back in December 2023. “And that’s why I often think of him as Donald ‘Herbert Hoover’ Trump.”

“A commander in chief’s duty is to always put the American people first; never to hope that hard-working families suffer economic pain for their own political benefit,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates mentioned on January 9.

Voters have frequently listed the economy as one of their top concerns heading into the 2024 presidential election.

A CNN poll released in December revealed that seven in ten Americans feel that economic conditions in the U.S. are poor. Respondents stated that their views on the economy aligned more with the Republican Party than the Democratic Party.

Biden has spent most of 2023 promoting his “Bidenomics” messaging through campaign events as well as advertising campaigns. He has so far been struggling to leave an impression on voters, mainly those who negatively perceive the effects that the president’s policies have on them.

There are some signs of improvements in the economy such as cooling inflation, lower gas prices and increasing wages.

During an interview with CNN conducted on January 5, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen spoke in defense of the economy’s status.

“There has been a lot of pessimism about the economy that’s really proven unwarranted,” Yellen shared. “A year ago, most forecasters believed we would fall into a recession. Obviously, that hasn’t happened. We have a good strong labor market.”

Biden advisers are aware that it might take a while for some of this economic news to take hold.

“President Biden has delivered where Trump has failed the American people,” Chavez Rodriguez claimed. “On day one, he got to work fixing the economic crisis Trump left behind by helping to create over 14 million jobs, including bringing back hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs, and lowering costs for families.”

“The bottom line: President Biden wakes up every day working and rooting for the American people. Donald Trump spends every day worried about himself,” the campaign manager added.

Trump will first have to overcome his many legal challenges, including his $370 million business fraud case in New York.

The race remains fluid, with multiple third-party candidates scrambling the situation.

In December, independent presidential candidate Cornel West said he believed that Biden would not make it to the 2024 general election.
